I made these cupcakes for a preschool fundraiser.  The white cupcakes are topped with chocolate buttercream, and the bugs and flowers are made of fondant.

Confirmation girl

Jacky, the adorable daughter of my friend Wendy, was being confirmed in the Catholic Church today and Wendy asked me to make a cake to help celebrate the special occasion.  The figure is Jacky in her confirmation dress and the cake is made to mimic the dress.  The black flowers were piped and painted with a technique called brush embroidery (my first attempt at this).

The figure is made entirely of fondant.

Bunco!!!

I made this cake for a bunco group - a fun, crazy group of ladies! Each die had a different flavor combination. The first one was vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream filling, the second one was chocolate cake with raspberry filling, and the third one was lemon cake with lemon buttercream filling. The lemon seemed to be the overall favorite. The bunco lady on top is holding a bell, which is used to signify the start of each bunco round (bell-ringer, you know who you are). Thanks to my friend, Kim, who asked me to make the cake and invited me to join in the party.

Playful Kitty

This was just for practice. I've been wanting to make a cake like this for awhile and I just got the new little tool that helped me with the yarn. Since my family is up to their eyeballs in cake (not that they're complaining), I gave this to two sweet girls that are friends of my boys.

Retro Circles

I made this cake for a 19 year-old young lady's "black and white" birthday party. I was so excited that she chose the retro circles because I've been dying to make a cake like this for awhile. The cake was a white cake, filled with three layers of raspberry buttercream. Thanks to my friend, DeAnna, for taking the pic when my camera was feeling finicky.

Animal fun!

I made this for a 13-year old girl who loves zebra prints. The cake is a white cake, filled with strawberry buttercream and covered with homemade fondant. The stripes, balls and letter N are also made from fondant. This one was a lot of fun to make!

Happy Valentine's Day!

A friend asked me to make a Valentine's Day cake for his lovely wife. It is a white cake with chocolate buttercream filling and white buttercream frosting on the outside. I think his thoughtfulness will keep him out of the doghouse for quite some time.

Are you ready for some football?

As we prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals to battle it out, I thought we needed a cake to celebrate the day (okay, do we really need an excuse to have a little cake?) Oh... I can hear the jeering from Canada all the way from here. No, I have not abandoned my Canadian roots. I won't keep you waiting too long for a Stanley Cup cake.

The Throwdown is On!

I made this cake for a throwdown (contest - for those of you not familiar with the younger vernacular) on an online cake forum that includes cake decorators from around the world. I'm competing against another decorator (if we can call ourselves that at this point) who has been decorating the same amount of time as I have. The theme was romance, in anticipation of Valentine's Day. Everything on the cake is made of edible materials. Everyone on the site has a chance to vote and the results will be known in a week. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Update: Thanks so much to all of you who voted for my cake. I appreciate the support! Unfortunately, I lost by 30 votes, but held 45% of the votes overall. I was proud of my showing!

The Beast

I made this for a friend's son's (and his friend's) birthday. For those of you not from Utah, the symbol is for the University of Utah Utes. The Utes (football) went undefeated this season and won the Sugar Bowl. I nicknamed this cake "The Beast" b/c it was SO big and incredibly heavy.

This one was made to take to school for his birthday. It was also his teacher's birthday, which the birthday boy's mum kindly wanted to acknowledge. The request was for a standard flower cake. However, in good conscience, I couldn't put only flowers on a teenaged boy's birthday cake.

Birthdays Galore!

Well, I'm happy to say that this was the weekend of birthday cakes. I enjoyed making all of these cakes, though may be feeling a little sleep-deprived! The first two cakes were made for a brother and sister (very good friends of my kids) who were having a joint birthday party with a magician.

The little girl loves anything pink!

This cake was made for a friend's daughter. It is the same design as a previous cake in my blog, but using different colors.

Fun & Bright!

I made this for my friend's daughter's birthday. The general idea was based on a cake on Charm City Cake's website. All of the decoration were done in fondant, except for the bow which was made from gumpaste. I had alot of fun making this!

Happy New Year!

I made this cake to celebrate the New Year! Actually, it was just a good excuse to practice some different piping.

Merry Christmas!

I made this cake for my family at Christmastime. The cake was chocolate, filled with a peppermint buttercream and crushed candy canes. All of the figures were made from fondant. The outside of the cake was covered with sanding sugar and royal icing snowflakes. I had a great time dreaming up the scene and making this.

They found a home!

The salon figures that I posted previously found a home on a beautiful cake made by my friend's mother-in-law. I love how the scissors were placed.

Reindeer Fun!

I made this mini cake by carving a 6-inch cake and then covering it with fondant. He's kind of goofy looking and makes me smile.

Fondant Figures

I've been playing around with fondant figures lately and this is what I have so far.

I made these for a friend who owns a salon and spa. She'll be putting them on top of a tiered cake.

Twilight Birthday

This cake was made for a 13-year-old girl's birthday. For those of you who aren't familiar with the books (and now movie), this is based on the covers from the Twilight series. Full credit is given to the fabulous decorator at www.SweetAustin.com for the inspiration for this cake. The checkerboard and chess pieces are done in fondant.

Spiders 'n Stuff

This is the cake that I made for my kids' Halloween party. The cake was chocolate, with chocolate buttercream frosting.

Halloween Fun!

These cookies are a great idea for a kid's party. I made sugar cookies in various Halloween shapes and then iced them with royal icing. At the party, the kids used "Food Writer" pens (available at Michael's) to decorate the cookies. They loved this!
